Population Genetics & Conservation
Research Cluster Overview
Research Cluster: Sustainable World
Topic: Population Genetics & Conservation
Theme: SDG 15
The Population and Conservation Genetics Research Centre is dedicated to understanding and preserving the genetic diversity of faunal species. It focuses on the genetic consequences of population breakdowns, expansions, or admixture processes, especially in endangered or vulnerable species. The centre uses genomic technologies and field data to assess species’ conservation status, offering insights into their genetic health and viability. In collaboration with elite institutions both in India and abroad, the centre applies population genetics, molecular biology, and ecological data to design effective conservation strategies and influence conservation policies through genetic insights.
Expected Outcomes
- Monitoring and managing populations
- Creating management and recovery plans
- Understanding genetic basis of adaptive traits
- Insights into climate change, habitat loss, and fragmentation effects
Current Projects
- Investigating Population Dynamics, Genetic Diversity & inbreeding depression in Endangered Kondana Soft furred rat of Pune, India: Implications to Conservation
